Spider man films: 20 years worth of differences

A comparison of all three reboots of our beloved web slinger. Now, we will see where this leads up to in the upcoming “Spider Man: No Way Home”.

(From Time Magazine)

With the excitement of the release of “Spider Man: No Way Home”, many are really excited to see what’s in store for us. And now that the teaser has been revealed to the world, many suggest that we will witness the return of the previous actors who we know as Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield respectively. People have different opinions as to which actor portrayed Spider Man better. But to sort things out, this is my comparison of all three “variations” of Spider man. Disclaimer: This blog is not to offend anyone.

To start, what better way to begin this comparison with Tobey Maguire? As Sony’s first attempt to Spider Man, Maguire worked hard and succeeding portrayed a nerdy, unpopular, high school student who focused only on his studies. If anything that I thought was great, it was the suit, without a doubt. An amazing element of this trilogy was that Sam Raimi and the crew that worked on on “Spider-Man” could have easily made the appearance of the suit barely look recognizable, they could have given him blue and red accents here and there. But they gave us a suit that would later become iconic for years to come. The trilogy did pretty good for itself. The idea is to recognize spider man, and this series did just that. Of course, it had its weak points as well. One of which was him becoming “emo”. If there is one thing I found that this Spider Man had that the other two did not, Tobey Maguire played a very good Peter Parker, and who he really is. So really, to me Tobey Maguire really brought Peter Parker to life, and was a good first try for Sony. Even years after the trilogy ended, Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider man to this day remains fresh on our minds. Also, he had organic webbing. (Yikes!)

When the Sam Raimi series sadly ended because Sam Raimi couldn’t find a script that he liked, a new director known as Marc Webb was hired to direct the new Spider Man series. Andrew Garfield was cast as Peter Parker, and the first film was released in 2012. People did not enjoy this film as much. Peter Parker is supposed to be unpopular, And here in this series, people actually knew Peter. They asked Peter to take pictures of him. Tobey Maguire on the other hand, people barely knew his name in the film. “The Amazing Spider man” series was not too bad. For example, Something I really liked was the web swinging sequences. They also did a great job in the costume designs. In this take on Spider Man, he had a very different and non-traditional suit. Now with a longer emblem, blue accents on the hands, and sunglasses for lenses. Fans either loved or hated it. I personally loved this design, it explored a different perspective of Spider Man. When the second film was released, they went back to traditional, and gave Spidey a new look, including wider lenses, silver webbing, and a nod to the Tom McFarlane comic suit design. While “The Amazing Spider Man” series kind of lowered peoples expectations, there is no doubt at all that some elements of this series were great.

Last, but not least. Tom Holland. The current Spider man that is luckily not rebooted. In this take on Spider Man, he would appear in some other films, as well as his two solo films (Spider Man: Homecoming, Spider Man: Far from home). Tom Holland did a good job portraying an unpopular high school student, so it did kind of remind me of Tobey Maguire. This time, Marvel made Spider Man a little advanced. Spider man can squint his lenses which shows some expression. He has 576 web combinations. Spidey now has a much smaller emblem on his chest which can also convert into a drone with a camera. As his suit comes locked and loaded, a lot of its appearance is based off of the the original Steve Ditko design. Spider man also supports an Iron-Spider suit, as well as a black and red color scheme, and a stealth suit. Spider Man also goes through a lot of troubles one of which was his identity revealed to the public and being known as a “menace to society”. I am really excited to see where this goes in the 3rd film. Going to the second film however, normally in a Spider Man film, we see Spider Man defeating villain's within New York. But in “Spider Man: Far from Home” , it was kind of different and unique as it was setting up outside of New York. So really, I think that Marvel wanted to try something different with these two films that we right now have and play around with it instead of limiting to something traditional.

Overall, my favorite Spider Man is probably Tobey Maguire because like said before, Maguire really captured the essence of Peter. To me, what means a lot is the suit. This is how you recognize Spider Man, which is why most of this was about the suit designs. I really do feel like The previous two actors will return like everyone else because after seeing the leaks, there really doesn’t seem like a way they cannot return. In conclusion, I believe that nothing beats the original. Of course, all three of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Please remember that I oppose no one who disagrees with me. But let’s see where this come down to in “Spider Man: No Way Home”.
